Upper Sabine Cattleman’s Conference March 24 in Canton

CANTON – The Upper Sabine Cattleman’s Conference will be held March 24 at the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds, 24742 Texas Highway 64 in Canton.
Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m.
The conference is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Wood, Rains, Kaufman and Van Zandt counties.
Cost is $20 per person. Organizers ask that attendees RSVP through the four AgriLife Extension county offices, including Wood at 903-763-2924, Rains at 903-473-4580, Kaufman at 972-932-9069 or Van Zandt at 903-567-4149, by March 17 for an accurate lunch count.
Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units — two integrated pest management and one general — will be available. Three Beef Quality Assurance credits will also be available for attendees.
Topics and speakers include:
- 300-Day Grazing System, Dr. John Jennings, University of Arkansas Extension forage specialist, Fayetteville, Arkansas.
- Cowboy Math: Using Ultrasound Data and EPDs to Improve Your Calf Crop, Alford Nichols, AgriLife Extension agent, Delta County.
- Alternative Marketing Strategies: All Natural vs. Grass Fed vs. Conventional, Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, College Station.
The conference will end with a producer panel discussion that includes Gill, Brian Cummins, retired AgriLife Extension agent and Buddy Edwards, co-owner of the Van Zandt Livestock Commission Co. in Wills Point.
“I believe the agents and their committees have put together a great program that will give cow/calf producers in our area tools to make better choices for their program, whether it be in grazing systems, improving the calf crop by use of ultrasound or utilizing alternative marketing strategies,” said Tommy Phillips, AgriLife Extension agent for Van Zandt County.
