Beef Cattle Short Course set for January in San Antonio

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Bexar County Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee will present the 2020 Beef Cattle Short Course on Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 at the Ozuna Library at Palo Alto College, 1400 Villaret Blvd. in San Antonio.

Regular registration for both day’s sessions will be at 5:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be refreshments and door prizes, along with a vendor area.

This year, there will be an additional optional program offered both days prior to the short course, where producers can obtain one Texas Department of Agriculture laws and regulations pesticide continuing education unit.

Both optional programs will begin at 5 p.m. Afterward, participants will be given time to register for the scheduled sessions.

“This program will address some of the overarching issues related to the beef cattle industry, as well as some of those practical issues important to individual beef cattle operations,” said Sam Womble, AgriLife Extension agriculture and natural resources agent, Bexar County.

The Jan. 7 session will offer two TDA continuing education units. Topics, presenters and CEUs will be:

— Optional: TDA Pesticide Laws and Regulations — Are You in Compliance? Melissa Barton, TDA pesticide inspector. One laws and regulations CEU.

— Range and Pasture Herbicide Product Update, Benny Martinez, range and pasture specialist, Corteva Agriscience. One integrated pest management CEU.

— U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service Programs Available to Producers, Samantha Salinas and Hector Pruneda, USDA-NRCS.

— Animal Traceability, Joe Paschal, Ph.D. AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi.

The Jan. 14 session topics, presenters and CEUs will be:

— Optional: Labels and Labeling, Vic Alexander, assistant regional director – pesticides, TDA. One laws and regulations CEU.

— Marketing Your Calves—What Producers Need to Know? Paschal, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist, Corpus Christi, with Mike Brzozowski of Gonzales Livestock Auction, Mitchell Hardcastle of Southern Livestock and cattle buyer Curtiss Park.

— Beef Cattle Nutrition and Supplementation Strategies, Lee Pritchard, Ridley Block Account manager, Crystalyx.
